Qualification Description

This qualification reflects the role of workers in a range of community settings and clients’ homes, who provide training and support in a manner that empowers people with disabilities to achieve greater levels of independence, self-reliance, community participation, and well-being. Workers promote a person-centered approach, work without direct supervision, and may be required to supervise and/or coordinate a small team.

Qualification Description

This qualification reflects the role of workers in a range of community settings and clients’ homes, who provide training and support in a manner that empowers people with disabilities to achieve greater levels of independence, self-reliance, community participation and wellbeing. Workers promote a person-centred approach, work without direct supervision and may be required to supervise and/or coordinate a small team. To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 120 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of the units of competency.


Outcomes

Learners can progress into any of following employment outcome:

  • Aged Care Worker

  • Nursing Support Worker

  • Respite Care Worker

  • Residential Disability Support Worker

Entry Requirement

There are no specific entry requirements for CHC43115 Certificate IV in Disability. However, learners are expected to possess the following in order to successful complete of this qualification:

  • should be over 18 years of age at the commencement of course.

  • possess ACSF level 3 in all aspects including Reading, Writing, Oral Communication, Numeracy and Learning.

  • have physically abilities as significant manual handling is required

Enrolment and Selection Process

Prior to enrolling a potential learner, a VIA enrolment officer will conduct a Pre-Training Review interview, which aims to identify the learner’s training needs and the suitability of this course to meet their needs, through questions on previous education or training, relevance of the course to the learner’s desired job outcome, relevant experience. The interview also aims to identify any support the learner may need to successfully undertake the course and possible RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) or Credit Transfer opportunities which may reduce the amount of training required. Through the PreTraining Review interview, the learner will demonstrate that they have necessary skills and personal attributes to successfully undertake the course and that the course selected is the most suitable to meet their needs. Selection for enrolment in our courses will be approved for applicants who meet the qualification entry requirements. In line with government policy, students with intellectual and physical disabilities, who meet the entry requirements are encouraged to participate in training.

Delivery and Location

Students are required to attend face to face classes for a minimum of three days per week and 7 hours a day, between 9.30am and 3.30pm. The classes will be delivered at 131 Johnston Street, Fitzroy 3065 Victoria. No interstate delivery is planned.

Expected Duration

The course will be delivered over 40 weeks including three weeks holidays. Class work is delivered over a 37 week block. Students will undertake 120 hours of work placement during the period of 40 weeks. Students are also required to do a minimum of 6 hours’ personal studies per week, which will require basic computer and internet skills to access the learning material for the course. Upon enrolment into the course, students will be given a link to access their learning materials (Workbooks) for the course, personal study include reading and research and completing the learning activities in the Workbooks. Students may complete their personal study in VIA’s Fitzroy study centre with our fully equipped library and computer lab. Our study centre is open Monday to Friday between 9.30am and 4.30pm with trainers available for support

Sessions

Classroom sessions include a blend or theory and practical activities. Assessments include a blend of theory and practical tasks, including, Written Questions, Demonstration/Observations, Case Studies, Role Plays and Projects.

Course Fees

This course is provided for fee for service students. For details about fee please refer to our Statement of Fees. We may be able to assist you, if you are going through financial hardship, please contact us for further information.

 
Fee Protection

To ensure the protection of fees paid in advance, we will not require payment of more than $1,500 from each individual student prior to the commencement of the course. Following course commencement, we require payment of additional fees in advance but ensure that at any given time, the total amount pre-paid for services does not exceed $1,500.

 
Cooling Off Period

Students are eligible to cancel their enrolment by placing a formal notice of cancellation in writing to the CEO (Letter or email) within 10 business days of enrolment, without attracting a cancellation fee, unless the student has already commenced the training.

Award

Upon fulfillment of all requirements learners will be issued CHC43115 Certificate IV in Disability within 30 days of completion of the qualification, as long as a valid USI has been provided and all fees have been paid. Learners who do not complete all requirements will be issued Statement of Attainment for units that are completed.

 
Recognition of Prior Learning

We have a simple but methodical RPL process, which is outlined in detail in the Policy on Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Applicants can apply for recognition of prior learning of their existing skills and knowledge that are relevant to the units of competency within the program. These skills and knowledge may have been obtained through workplace training or experience and may reduce the number of units required to be completed during the program. Students are encouraged to notify us of their interest or intention to apply for RPL prior to their enrolment.

 
Credit Transfer

Credit transfer applies to situations where learners have completed unit(s) at another provider identical to those in which they plan to enroll. Credit will be granted in accordance with the Credit Transfer procedure. To apply for credit transfer learners must complete the credit transfer application form and attach copies of verified documents to support the application. A reduction in tuition fees will be applied if Credit Transfer is granted. A Credit transfer will also result in reduction in duration of the course.

 
Work Placement

In order to put into practice what you will learn during your course and to help you gain experience, you are required to complete a compulsory 120 hours work placement. Victorian International Academy have a range of partners we work with to coordinate your work placement, who can often offer our students employment following their work placement. Usually the work placements will be undertaken in full time mode, even if your classes are part time, which means that it requires your attendance for 5 days per week over a three-week period. Some workplaces may offer less number of days per week resultantly work placement duration may increase. It is important to note that the placement shifts may include weekends and/or public holidays as determined by the placement host facility. If you have any concerns of how it may affect your current job or commitments, please discuss this with your trainer or the VIA administration team. During your work placement, you should take advantage of every learning opportunity offered. You may increase your confidence and job competence during this valuable time to help you access successful employment after completion of your course.

 
National Police Check Requirements

Prior to commencing your compulsory work placement, you will be required to provide VIA with a current National Police Check (obtained no more than six months previously). Police Checks take a minimum of 10 business days to be processed and cost approximately $50, VIA can offer you a reduced fee of $18.40 as a volunteer doing work placement, please contact our office for the application form.

 
Manual Handling Requirements

Learners are expected to have physical abilities and manual handling required to perform tasks as those undertaken by a Disability Support worker in the workplace while undergoing training. Workers in these roles work physically close to other people and will spend a large amount of time on their feet.

 
Learner Resources

Learners are expected to have access to a laptop/desktop, Windows 7 or above operating system, internet access, MS Office application such as Microsoft Word and an email platform at their own cost. Learners are also expected to have access to their own notebook and pen while attending classroom or online sessions to take notes.

 
Course Structure

Total number of units = 14

  • 11 core units

  • 3 elective units, consisting of:

    • at least 2 units from the electives listed below

    • up to 1 unit from the electives listed below, any endorsed Training Package or accredited course – these units must be relevant to the work outcome

All electives chosen must contribute to a valid, industry supported vocational outcome.

COVID-19 Pandemic – additional requirements

With the high risk of coronavirus in vulnerable people, the Chief Health Officer has implemented new conditions that apply to students undertaking work placements. From 1 May 2020, all visitors, staff, and volunteers at residential aged care facilities must have an up-to-date vaccination for influenza and will be required to provide proof of having the 2020 Flu vaccination. In addition, visitors, workers and volunteers must not enter any of the nominated care facilities if they:

  • are unwell with flu-like symptoms, such as a cough, sore throat, runny nose, shortness of breath, or fever

  • have arrived back in Australia from overseas in the last 14 days

  • have had known contact in the last 14 days with a person who was a confirmed case of coronavirus (COVID-19)

  • have a temperature higher than 37.5 degrees

  • Travel history screening
